Top 5 Cafés by Kim Fielding

Hi there! One thing I love to do is sit at a café, nursing a coffee drink and people-watching. Here are my Top 5 cafés:

5. Café du Monde, New Orleans, Louisiana—Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, you can get better beignets elsewhere. But it’s been there since 1862, it’s open 24/7 (except for Christmas or hurricanes), and I’m a sucker for chicory café au lait. 

4. Rimsky-Korsakoffee House, Portland, Oregon—The coffee’s good and the desserts are great, but the real draw is the quirkiness. I don’t want to spoil the experience by telling you too much, but if you go, make sure to visit the bathroom. And keep a close eye on your table.

3. Caffe Trieste, San Francisco, California—I admit a bias here because my grandfather was from Trieste, Italy. This café is pure San Francisco though, full of local characters. It’s a fantastic place to people-watch or do a little writing. I’m fairly certain, however, that the mural on the wall depicts Rovinj (Croatia) and not Trieste.

2. Murinsel, Graz, Austria—This place is located on a floating manmade island in the middle of a river. On a warm afternoon, sip your Aperol Spritz at a regular table or in the amphitheater seats. And there’s a playground right there to occupy your kids.

1. Buža, Dubrovnik, Croatia—You might recognize Dubrovnik as the beautiful walled city where the Kings Landing scenes are filmed in Game of Thrones. You reach Buža via a nearly-hidden hole in the wall, and then you perch on a bit of land with the wall behind you and a cliff-drop down to the Adriatic in front of you. Pay a few kuna for a drink and you can sit there all day, gazing at nearby islands and watching ships sail by. Perfection.
