One of the best parts of working with an indie press is that your publisher asks you what you want on the front cover of your book. For The Sun Dragon Series, my answer is always simple: a dragon, every single time.
As my author bio states, I believe there's no such thing as too many dragons. In just the first book, there are sun dragons, ice dragons, and earth dragons; in the newest book, Merlin's Moon, the main character, Mani, is a unique type who turns into his dragon form when the moon comes out. And that's not all—every book in The Sun Dragon Series adds even more to this complex universe of dragons, witches and wizards, sorceresses, and other magical creatures.
Still, dragons are my favorite. Not just because they’re beautiful (shiny scales, elegant wings, sharp features—need I say more?), or because they’re strong, powerful, fire-breathing creatures, but because they make such a perfect canvas on which a writer can paint his or her own story. For example, even though I think the idea of a bone dragon (coming in book three) is cool to think about, I think the combination of a bone dragon mixed with a society of intersex people who are forced to pick a gender in their human forms (until the day they don’t, of course) is way cooler to think about. What better way to think about the performance of gender than that?
I don’t just love my own imagined dragons, however; I love all books, movies, and shows that have dragons in them, too. So in honor of the newest installment, I thought I would make a list of my favorite books, shows, and movies with dragons in them. Comment your favorites below!
